Staff Night

Camp 2009 officially started on Saturday at 1pm with almost all of the 27 staff members showing up on time (it’s a miracle!). We believe it’s very important for the staff to have time to bond and prepare for the week of camp to come, and in order to do this we have a night devoted purely to the staff at the beginning of camp. This year our staff night was chalk full of pizza, thunderstorms, prayers, and swimming (not during the storms of course). After a 3 hour orientation meeting the staff proceeded to do evening prayers and head … Continue reading

Camp Is Over

That’s it, we’re outta here. It was a very special week, and with the extra day the staff has been here for a full 7 days. We’re ready to go back out into the real world, but we’re really going to miss camp, as always. Divine Liturgy just wrapped up and the campers are beginning to clean up the grounds, pack up their stuff, and prepare for the journey home. The campers will have a final counseling group and then Luke will give the final challenge, which usually consists of a wrap-up of the teachings at camp and how to … Continue reading

Dancing!

On Wednesday night Carrie Hodges led us in some good old fashioned line dancing. We were amazed at how many people participated. In fact, every single camper took part in the dancing. This was a good get-to-know-you event because it allowed campers to talk to other campers that they may not have had a chance to get to know yet. It was also very hot, just like every other activity thus far at camp, so water was on hand and everyone drank plenty of it. It’s a good thing we were headed up to the pool for another night of … Continue reading

Camp Olympics and Hawaiian Luau

On Tuesday evening all campers participated in the camp olympics. There were 7 teams of campers, and each team ran from station to station participating in challenging Olympic-type sports and contests headed up by a pair of counselors. Some of the stations included obstacle courses, egg tosses, Bible trivia, puzzle assembly, and “make John and Art laugh” in which the team was rewarded for making both John Beecham and Josh Clemens laugh at the same time. Sadly, not a single team emerged victoriously from this station. But the teams had much more luck at the 6 other stations. After the … Continue reading

All Camp Photo

Here they are, the serious and funny versions of the all camp photo and the staff photo. Yes, they’re small pictures because this blog post is being uploaded via a dial-up connection, so please be patient – the full versions will be uploaded as soon as camp is over, and they will be included in the camp media packets.

Teachings

This week has been full of good teachings given by excellent teachers. Some topics covered were the relationship between the body, soul, and nous, how to show our love in actions and not just words/ideas, theosis, and the general state of the Orthodox Church in America. As you know already, Fr. Joseph spoke on Monday, and we’ve been continually blessed with good speakers since then. Here are David Becker and Fr. David Wey giving their teachings on Tuesday: Here are Luke Beecham and Bob Coolman giving their teachings on Wednesday: And here are Archbishop Job’s Thursday sessions including the town … Continue reading
